Flexibility is one of the most important & least understood variables in footwear.

Our Purpose
The Center for Better Flex is an educational resource that highlights the importance of footwear flexibility and ways to improve it.
Flex shapes how footwear interacts with the body. Yet compared to cushioning, traction, and stability, it’s rarely given the attention it deserves.
For decades, footwear flexibility was treated as a byproduct of materials and construction rather than a performance variable intentionally designed and engineered. With advances in materials science, biomechanics, and Advanced Footwear Technology (AFT), that is beginning to change.
The Center for Better Flex exists to build a shared language around flex, for consumers who want to make smarter footwear choices and for an industry ready to design and engineer more intentionally. When flex is understood and engineered with purpose, footwear can better support how the body moves.
Why Flex Matters
Flex is Fundamental to Movement
Everyone knows your foot flexes when you walk. What's less obvious is how much is actually happening beneath the surface and how much footwear influences it.
Flex Matters

The human body is dynamic and asymmetric. Joints move differently in different directions, and muscles, tendons, and ligaments continuously adapt to changing demands. Yet most footwear materials and constructions still provide largely static mechanical behavior.
Because the foot sits at the foundation of human movement, footwear influences how forces move through the body and plays a meaningful role in comfort, stability, efficiency, and control.
When flex is engineered intentionally, footwear can work more naturally with the body across different movements and activities. Understanding flex is the first step toward choosing footwear that better matches how you move.

Flex Life.
Footwear may be humanity’s earliest wearable technology, existing tens of thousands of years before smartwatches, sensors, and fitness trackers. Yet only recently have advances in materials, biomechanics, and manufacturing made it possible to engineer flex with a higher level of precision and intent.
We’re building a community of designers, athletes, researchers, marketers, and everyday wearers who believe better flex can lead to better movement.
